Summer 2019 Update

Dearest Whip-Poor-Will Families,

We share in detail about Camp Whip-Poor-Will.

2016 ANNOUNCEMENT
As you remember in 2016 the land owners (children of our deceased Board Member who had purchased the land for the camp ) decided to sell and we had sadly announced the ending of WPW. We are so thankful that we later were offered more years (when the contract did not work out) and you faithful families shared our joy by sending us your special campers once again.

CAMP WAS ALLOWED TO CONTINUE AS LAND DID NOT SELL
At the end of 2018 summer camp, we were given permission to further use the camp and were planning a Fall overnight as well as offering more special events throughout the years of 2018 and 2019 until the land sold. We were so thankful that the children (of the original owner, a Board Member) selling the property, were allowing this opportunity once again.

CAMP LODGE
However, in Union County in September, Hurricane Florence came with a vengeance and Camp WPW was a part of the devastation. With record rains of 10+ inches in Union County and 5 feet of water on the property, the lodge, in eight rooms, was flooded in water , in excess of 12 inches, leaving damaged walls, cabinets, equipment and supplies.

CAMP WOODS
The woods and exterior property were also severely damaged as well. Trees and limbs down, debris all about with tables thrown everywhere like matchsticks, tools, and machines flooded. Where camp trails, hiked by thousands once lay, now are mostly covered by broken and fallen trees. Homes in the Woods, once housing the most excited of campers, are a part of the remnants of the storm and rains. as well as out-door buildings with equipment ruined.

FLOOD LAND (creeks surround the property)
There was no flood insurance and the loss of so much has taken its toll on the closure, which we shall continue working on in the months to come.
We have worked during past months, seeking to salvage all that was possible hoping that the camp could continue.

OWNER OF LAND DECISION:
We met with the owners of the land again on Friday, as we have been awaiting some decisions, so that we could give you an update on Summer 2019.

The owner had determined that the expense and getting adequate help to make the lodge mold, mildew safe, tearing out and replacing walls, painting floors, repairing the grounds, checking trees for safety, and more would be an expense that they did not want at this time. At this meeting, however, they did agree to possibly do some work there, but could not accomplish anything for this year. They have expressed the hope that IF THE PROPERTY DOES NOT SELL BY 2020 AND IF THEY GET THE WORK DONE AND ALL OF US FEEL THAT IT IS SAFE, WE MAY AGAIN BE OFFERED THE OPPORTUNITY TO PURSUE A 2020 WPW SUMMER.

Originally they felt they would just sell the property, as it is in its present state, as WPW can not bear another expense of improvements. It looked very hopeful for several years, as about four to six interested parties for purchase asked that WPW continue there, but the offers were not adequate for the owners of the land.

BEGINNINGS
Strangely enough, the camp still looks better than the day in 1998 when we walked in and began our pursuit of turning it into Camp WPW. It was then an abandoned and devastated property. We cut trails, roads, dug that great fishing pond, planted trees, painted, and set up those little homes for the campers along with preparing the inside with insulation, walls, bathrooms, a kitchen, ceilings, paint, windows and a really cozy camp for all those Whip-Poor-Wills! If you came to any of our many family camp events, you know the Magic!

REMEMBER THE FLOODS OF GOOD MEMORIES
While sadness is present for all of us, that camp will not be this year, we shall remember the floods of memories, the floods of joy and song, the floods of little campers finding their place in God's world of beauty, and hopefully finding a little extra love from God and others as they once walked the now flooded WPW, where water still stands today.

UPDATES TO FOLLOW:
We shall keep you updated as miracles happen every day! With any other plans for WPW that become possible, we shall let you know by email .
We did not want to delay further so that your camper(s) can find another place of summer enrichment!

SINCE 1982 SUMMERS HAVE BEEN SO SPECIAL!
We shall indeed miss you, each one, so very much! Please, please, let your favorite camper(s) know that our prayers and love are with them this summer. We shall miss their happy faces. We shall miss our joy of providing another special Summer!
